M/S Alpo returned to Normandy while raising funds for Ukraine
The tugboat M/S Alpo travelled from its home port of Oulu to take part in the 80th anniversary celebrations of D-day in France. Built in 1943, the vessel was used in the preparations for the Normandy landings, and today Andament is one of its owners.
M/S Alpo attracted great interest in Normandy and the vessel was also featured on the Ukrainian TV channel 1+1 Media.
This is Alpo’s third trip to Normandy. The tug was last seen in Normandy waters in 2004, the 60th anniversary of D-Day.
Similarly to last time, the forces of nature – including pack ice in the Bay of Bothnia and rough seas off the Netherlands – posed challenges for M/S Alpo and the crew, but despite the spectacular adventure, the tugboat arrived in the port of Le Havre in early June as planned.
Throughout the journey, the media and the public have eagerly followed M/S Alpo’s progress. An important part of the tugboat’s purpose during its journey was to raise funds for Ukraine through the UNITED24 Foundation launched by President Volodymyr Zelensky. “Just as in Normandy, the people in Ukraine are fighting for their freedom. M/S Alpo is carrying on an important tradition and I’m thrilled that it is involved in such a significant fundraising effort,” says Jukka Juola, Managing Director of Andament.
